Perspective - Recreational drug use

Recently I have been meeting with someone to discuss some culturally accepted practices that are against the traditional Biblical perspective. Looking to explore these, I have presented some readings and comments to help anyone formulate a response should they ever be challenged in their everyday life.

Stewardship of the Body – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Engaging in recreational drug use can harm the body, which goes against us being good stewards.

Sobriety and Clarity of Mind – 1 Peter 5:8

We are to be sober-minded. Recreational drug use can impair judgment, clarity of thought, and self-control, hindering our ability to make good decisions when we are under spiritual attack.

Avoiding Harmful Influences – 1 Corinthians 15:33

To stay away from situations that can lead to harm. Recreational drugs often lead to addiction, and dependency, and can cause harm to relationships, and overall well-being.

Respecting Authorities – Romans 13:1-7

We are to respect the governing authorities. Engaging in recreational drug use often involves breaking laws. Jesus is ultimately the sovereign power.

Seeking Fulfillment in God – Psalm 16:11, John 10:10

True fulfilment and joy are found in our relationship with God rather than in temporary pleasures. Any temporary pleasures or success pales in comparison to our relationship with God which provides lasting satisfaction, purpose, and eternal life.
